Traumatic open globe injury—epidemiology, risk factors and visual outcome at the University Hospital Aachen

Summary Background Ocular trauma is still a major cause leading to enucleation. This study aims analyze the visual outcome, epidemiology and risk factors of open globe injury (OGI) at University Hospital Aachen, Germany. Material methods A retrospective analysis patient records involving traumatic OGI treated surgically between 2005 2015 was conducted. Age, gender, accident, ocular score, best corrected acuity (BCVA) presentation after treatment as well location were evaluated. Results Of 2272 eyes with trauma, 102 patients identified, which 65% male 35% female. Women significantly older than men ( p < 0.001). The most common domestic syncopal episodes (47%). Work-related injuries occurred exclusively in 8.8%. total 16% had no light perception (NLP) presentation, 69% improved post intervention hand movement or better. Endophthalmitis observed 4% all cases. Enucleation needed mostly due rupture. Location OGI, pseudophakia initial BCVA are for poor final BCVA. Patients’ did not improve further three surgeries. Conclusion Traumatic poses challenge terms planning prognostic outcome. rise elderly multimorbidity represents secondary obstacle treatment. Patients NLP can be moderate success.
